This story has potential, it just seemed like within the chapters, scenes didn't really flow well, and just jumped to a future time。 There were times I wasn't sure what was exactly happening, as well。 This story has potential, it just seemed like within the chapters, scenes didn't really flow well, and just jumped to a future time。 There were times I wasn't sure what was exactly happening, as well。 。。。more

Wow I was really happy with this manga。 This is essentially a teenage drama with mermaids。 Reading this with the thought of the anime, it was essentially quite a few episodes smashed together which was awesome for me, plus it was hilarious to see everything coming back to me although the end of this manga was a bit different than the anime。 For someone new to the series though, you might be sad that you don't know the songs in this and you'll definitely appreciate it。 I think its very kid friend Wow I was really happy with this manga。 This is essentially a teenage drama with mermaids。 Reading this with the thought of the anime, it was essentially quite a few episodes smashed together which was awesome for me, plus it was hilarious to see everything coming back to me although the end of this manga was a bit different than the anime。 For someone new to the series though, you might be sad that you don't know the songs in this and you'll definitely appreciate it。 I think its very kid friendly (at least to me) and its very fun and interesting。 The art is also beautiful。 Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars only because there are a lot of sporadic text everywhere。 。。。more

The anime was a big part of my childhood: my Country dubbed all the songs so that when I went to school my friends and I would always sing together, the lyrics etched into our mind。As much as I dreaded those long minutes of constant singing when I re-watched it with my sister, I think that's the main reason why we all loved it when it was airing。 The story, the characters, all of it was similar enough in the manga, but it didn't give me the same feelings。 I guess nostalgia is an important factor The anime was a big part of my childhood: my Country dubbed all the songs so that when I went to school my friends and I would always sing together, the lyrics etched into our mind。As much as I dreaded those long minutes of constant singing when I re-watched it with my sister, I think that's the main reason why we all loved it when it was airing。 The story, the characters, all of it was similar enough in the manga, but it didn't give me the same feelings。 I guess nostalgia is an important factor in this king of things。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I used to love this manga back when I was in middle school (about a decade ago), and I still do, only to a certain extent。 I reread this manga recently and while it was nostalgic bliss, it also contained things that really annoyed me or made me uncomfortable that I never noticed before in detail。 The first thing that bothered me were the character's appearances and the creepy sexualization。 According to the manga, they are 13 years old (14-15 later in the series), yet, they look like they are be I used to love this manga back when I was in middle school (about a decade ago), and I still do, only to a certain extent。 I reread this manga recently and while it was nostalgic bliss, it also contained things that really annoyed me or made me uncomfortable that I never noticed before in detail。 The first thing that bothered me were the character's appearances and the creepy sexualization。 According to the manga, they are 13 years old (14-15 later in the series), yet, they look like they are between the ages of 17-18 years old (Yes, I am aware that the mermaids become adults at 13), which leads them to being constantly sexualized (Volume 3 was the biggest offender with the beauty contest at one of the southern islands。 Lucia wore an extremely skimpy bikini and older guys were oogling at her。 At the end of the chapter, her bikini top falls off and everyone starts cheering)。 Another is the fanservice involving Hanon in volume 5 where Hippo accidentally peeps at Hanon getting out of the shower。 I understand that this was a manga aimed at little girls in Japan but still。 There were also some provocative scenes between Kaito and Lucia (The splash page for the short side manga near the end of voiume 4 and others。 God, they're still in their early teens。) It's almost feels like softcore porn。 The second thing was how the romance was written。 I was never a fan of Kaito to begin with, but I really disliked him because of how Lucia made her entire life revolve around him。 An example of this would be in the second arc after Gaito, when Kaito has his memory erased by Mikeru and Lucia doesn't do anything to help him earn his memory back。 She just sits back and cries。 I just feel that this manga, which had a more superior anime (even though that has its own set of issues) had the potential to tell us more about the mermaid world, but really wasted it with the romance between the three main characters。 Which leads us to the characters。 Lucia was my favorite character back when I was hyper-obsessed with the series, but now, I see her character as irritating。 It seems like her whole life revolves around Kaito, which I said previously and she's pretty much a Usagi clone (besides her mermaid + idol appearance)。 Hanon isn't much better (worse in fact), as she is also boy crazy like Lucia and had a creepy infatuation with her music teacher which thank GOD, he turned her down, but then she went for a boy that was a year or two younger than her。 Rina was a decent character at first, your typical cool and enigmatic character in the beginning, but then she sadly descended down to romance once Hamasaki is introduced。 Caren, Noel, and Coco were probably the only decent characters of the story but they didn't get any character development, which was shafted in favor of the main 3 and their love lives。 I don't really have an opinion on Hippo, but I guess he was okay? The villians were meh。 Gaito was your typical pretty boy villian and the same applies to Mikeru。 Sara, who was the former Orange Mermaid Princess, had a really stupid reason for going to the dark side, and that was because Mitsuki-sensei (The music teacher that Hanon had a crush on), didn't see her for the sake of her duty。 The other female villians, aside from Sara, were meh。 I guess Lady Bat was cool? The story itself is fast paced, and it just keeps shifting from one thing to the other。 The art。。。。was okay。 It is definitely a style of the early 2000s, which I used to adore。 The beginning of the series definitely didn't have much detail but starting at volume 4, the art changed dramatically, looking a lot like Arina Tanemura's art with more detail, so I guess that's the only good thing about it, but it doesn't come close compared to the better manga art that I've seen。 So I gave it a 2 out of five。 One for the nostalgia and two for the okay art。 Definitely better for the younger crowd who is starting out in manga/anime。 。。。more

Okay so a friend recommended this to me and it's not great。 The art style is less than inspired to say the least and the romance I think is going for a sweat and fresh take on mermaids but its a bit off almost unsettling。 I'm not a huge manga fan so maybe it's a cultural thing。 The premise is pretty interesting if not a bit hackneyed(but most stories are and recover through their storytelling) but poor execution。 That being said if you're a fan of manga it might be worth a read and for a mermaid Okay so a friend recommended this to me and it's not great。 The art style is less than inspired to say the least and the romance I think is going for a sweat and fresh take on mermaids but its a bit off almost unsettling。 I'm not a huge manga fan so maybe it's a cultural thing。 The premise is pretty interesting if not a bit hackneyed(but most stories are and recover through their storytelling) but poor execution。 That being said if you're a fan of manga it might be worth a read and for a mermaid manga it might be good(emphasis on might) but personally the completionist in me made me finish it。 。。。more

Years ago, I'd seen this in B&N and had thumbed through it out of mild curiosity but never read through the whole thing or picked it up to own。 Picked up volume 1 from browsing Amazon, again out of mild curiosity。As far as magical girl manga series tend to start off, this one begins with a little bit of existing self-awareness on the parts of the characters。 They already know what their mission is, they have some idea of what their basic powers are, and their quest is already underway。 There are Years ago, I'd seen this in B&N and had thumbed through it out of mild curiosity but never read through the whole thing or picked it up to own。 Picked up volume 1 from browsing Amazon, again out of mild curiosity。As far as magical girl manga series tend to start off, this one begins with a little bit of existing self-awareness on the parts of the characters。 They already know what their mission is, they have some idea of what their basic powers are, and their quest is already underway。 There are seven mermaid princesses total with these powers, three of which we meet in volume 1, and our resident Big Bad (who shares the same face as the primary Love Interest) is。。。a。。。parody of Gackt, gone evil。Most readers may or may not know who Gackt is in Japanese pop culture and in the event you're among the latter, you don't necessarily need to know who Gackt is in order to read this series。 Otherwise you'll probably reach the Big Bad's intro and have the same flat reaction I did。So, the good things about Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch。It is cute and fluffy。 Good lord, is it cute。 The art is cute, it's very sugary-sweet shoujo, and it can just be mindless fluff when you need to unwind with an adorable series。The things I didn't like? Eehh, I feel like there's a lot of unnecessary focus on our MC, Lucia's romance with her LI, Kaito。 Yes, Kaito is important to the story too, but there's so much emphasis on foreshadowing the significance of his role, that as a result the rest of the cast doesn't seem to get a lot of character development。 Heck, that's my other issue with this as a first volume to a series。 A lot happens in this first volume (and quite a bit of time passes from where we open to where volume 1 ends) but there seems to be very little character development for Lucia or any of the other mermaids。 There's just so much focus on Kaito it lampshades everything else。That being said, I do recommend it to anyone who loves magical girl series, mermaids, or is just looking for something fluffy to read。 I did enjoy it, and I look forward to seeing where the rest of the series goes。 。。。more

Pichi Pichi Pitch: Volume 1 is a cute manga book about mermaids。 The artwork is excellent and the story is a lot of fun。 I found myself getting lost a little bit and the adaptation is not a fluid as it could have been and the story kind of jumps around a bit。 I enjoy the evil henchmen of Gackto that keep popping up。 Their job is to grab the mermaids and take them back to their boss。 But their sweet melodic voices have magical power and they are able to defeat those evil henchmen, or should I say Pichi Pichi Pitch: Volume 1 is a cute manga book about mermaids。 The artwork is excellent and the story is a lot of fun。 I found myself getting lost a little bit and the adaptation is not a fluid as it could have been and the story kind of jumps around a bit。 I enjoy the evil henchmen of Gackto that keep popping up。 Their job is to grab the mermaids and take them back to their boss。 But their sweet melodic voices have magical power and they are able to defeat those evil henchmen, or should I say henchwomen, since they are all girls。 Let it be known that if a mermaid reveals who they really are to a human, they turn into sea foam (that sure doesn't sound like a fun thing to have happen)。 So what is Lucia going to do as she finds herself falling in love with Kaito?
